Alpha Tekniko: SomerCor SBA 504 Feature

Alpha Tekniko is an FDA-registered developer and manufacturer of custom support surfaces for a variety of durable medical equipment including multi-function hospital beds, specialty stretchers, operating room tables and wheelchairs.

Founded in 2008 by Ted and Tia Lazakis, the company outgrew multiple rented facilities in Lake Zurich, IL and realized it made more financial sense to build a purpose-driven plant rather than to continue trying to modify someone else’s space.

With the assistance of loan officer Eric Bacon and a supportive team from SomerCor, Alpha Tekniko obtained an SBA 504 loan that helped cover the purchase of land and construction of a 78,000 square foot building in Lake Zurich.  The company’s management offices; R & D lab; manufacturing, assembly, warehousing and fulfillment areas are combined at the location, with sufficient factory space to reorganize equipment in ways that enhance materials flow and process efficiency for Alpha’s specialized work groups.

An added benefit of building their own facility was the opportunity to add multiple green features a particular commitment of owner Ted Lazakis. “From the outset, we made it a priority to preserve as many trees as possible on the site we bought,” Lazakis said. “We saved two acres of trees and then added more than 100 additional trees, bushes and plants to beautify the exterior.”

Lazakis also insisted on the use of construction materials that supported his environmentally-friendly goals, including high R-value insulated precast concrete walls that help reduce the use of interior HVAC; and VOC-free paints used throughout the interior.

The building also boasts more than an acre of rooftop solar panels 444 installed on a specially-reinforced roof and is now able to operate fully solar powered.

As a direct result of the green focus of the building, as well as its modern design and up-to-date, the Alpha Tekniko headquarters was recently awarded top prize by the Illinois Real Estate Journal for an Industrial/Manufacturing project in the northwest quadrant of the state.  The award was accepted by Premier Design/Build Group, who were instrumental in bringing the Lazakis’ vision to fruition.

“Tia and I started this business with a commitment to make higher-quality, patient-conscious support surfaces that would help reduce pressure injuries (bed sores).  Over the years, as we have moved into progressively larger facilities, we have seen our investment in R & D, talented employees and state-of-the-art CNC machinery pay off in the form of job creation, sales growth and long-standing customer relationships.  With the help of SomerCor and our SBA 504 loan, we can now say that our new building is kind of a testimonial to our mission and our continued commitment to both the healthcare industry and the community in which we work,” concluded Ted.
