In celebration of Black History Month, SomerCor recognizes Dr. Juanita Macklin. She is an entrepreneur, health care professional, and an educator – passionate about serving at-risk communities.

After teaching nursing students at three different institutions, Dr. Juanita Macklin launched J´Reneé College with the goal of teaching both the art and science of nursing to a diverse population. Her faculty and staff support and prepare students for lifelong learning and leadership roles in healthcare. The college offers programming tailored to the adult learner as well as state-of-the-art learning tools.

Once J´Reneé College outgrew the space Macklin was renting, she decided to purchase a commercial space that she could renovate. She utilized an SBA 504 loan, originated and serviced by SomerCor, to completely transform a closed chain restaurant at her desired geographic location into a functional space. The 504 loan provided her with the resources and flexibility to create her vision of an ideal learning environment. The college has small classrooms, administrative offices, and a simulation lab. The end result is a space that has all the required features of a nursing college, but is welcoming and comfortable.
