JOB OPENING: Community Development Associate

Role Purpose

Under direction of the Program Director, the Community Development Associate (CDA) manages a portfolio of Small Business Improvement Fund and Neighborhood Opportunity Fund (SBIF/NOF) projects. These programs are high volume and high touch; they require a team that is responsive in a fast-paced environment, diligent, attentive to details and most importantly able to communicate well with a broad range of stakeholders. The CDA also provides support on program data reporting, coordination with the City of Chicago Department of Planning and Development (DPD) and public presentations promoting the funds.

Duties and Responsibilities Summary

  • Portfolio/Project Management: This is the most critical function of the CDA’s role. The CDA handles a high volume of active SBIF/NOF projects (program split as assigned by Program Director), ranging from 60 – 100+ projects at any given time. Project management includes engaging with business owners regularly to ensure program compliance and completing site visits to the project property.
  • Application processing: The CDA, under the direction of the Program Director, ensures all applications submitted are filed and in a timely manner following application deadlines. The CDA is responsible for screening and reviewing applications; working with applicants to ensure their projects are implemented and in compliance with program rules. Duties include sending notifications to community leaders, area businesses who have previously applied, and other interested parties to inform them when relevant SBIF districts are accepting applications.
  • Data Reporting: The CDA will be assigned regular reporting requirements (e.g. monthly closed SBIF reports provided to DPD) and will be responsible for ensuring those reports are completed properly and submitted on time.
  • SBIF Rollouts & Public Events: The CDA will participate with the APD on approximately 25% of the public presentations required for rollout events. The CDA will work to increase their comfort levels with public presentations and will take on increasing responsibilities in this capacity as warranted. In addition to rollouts, the CDA will be expected to present at other public events including events produced by the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection.
  • Other duties as assigned: The CDA may be assigned to work with the Program Director to refine documents and procedures to improve efficiency and clarity in both the SBIF and NOF programs.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter with strong organizational skills, the ability to multi-task, and is ready to be part of a team with a shared mission of supporting economic development in Chicago.
